Alex comes to Diversecities with extensive leadership as the Director of Project and Engagement with Pro Bono Law Alberta and board of director experience with Miskanawah Community Services Association and Calgary Fetal Alcohol Network. Alex also has in-depth experience working within Calgary’s immigrant sector at Calgary Regional Immigrant Employment Council. Prior to arriving in Calgary from Venezuela in 2016, Alex graduated with a Bachelor of Law and successful leadership experience with many international humanitarian non-governmental organizations, such as the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Alex both embodies and is a shining example of Diversecities' core belief of social mobility. Since arriving in Calgary with limited English proficiency, Alex has quickly established himself as a leader within the community and completed a Master of Arts in Leadership from the Royal Roads University. Alex joins Diversecities at an exciting time as we continue our transformation to serve an even greater and broader number of Calgarians. Alex will be re-introducing Divesecities’ mission, values, and most importantly, our 40-plus years story of serving Calgarians in need. Alex will lead Diversecities’ team of volunteers and staff to new levels of success as we reach for our vision of becoming a welcoming home for immigrants, where Calgarians of differing ethnic origins are meaningfully engaged in the community.

As a new immigrant coming from Hong Kong, I experienced and understood the struggles that new immigrants are facing in settlement and integration. With the passion of wanting to support new immigrant families, I joined the agency in 2012. In the past decade, I facilitated White Ribbon Training in engaging more volunteer interpreters in providing language support for other community members who have language barriers in accessing medical system. The Buddy Group meets on weekly basis. Other than sharing information about seniors’ benefit, this group provides peer support for those who are transitioning for their retirement. I am also coordinating volunteer training program which offers the knowledge and experience for volunteers and providing more volunteer resources for the community. As the facilitator of New Immigrants Circle, we connect members in making new friends and getting social connection in learning about Canadian culture and history. I am also passionate in providing education in community through church, zoom sessions, and groups, to help newcomers in understanding Canadian culture, resources and systems, and empowering them in shining in the community. I am very proud of our long-term Women (Knit & Craft) Group, who are very engaging in community events in supporting our agency in the past two decades. They are a good example to show how members are empowered and giving back to the community. My goal is to see each individual could be empowered through the engagement with our programs and thrive in the community. Personal preferences: table tennis, badminton and hiking.
