Diversecities Announces Appointment of Cindy Au as Interim Chief Executive Officer

Calgary, AB, June 24, 2024 – Diversecities, a dedicated charitable organization committed to enhancing social mobility for Calgarians, announces a leadership transition.

After a successful two-year tenure as CEO of Diversecities, Alex Montiel has made the personal decision to step down from his role as Chief Executive Officer of Diversecities and pursue new professional opportunities. The Board of Directors at Diversecities with mixed feelings accepted Alex’s decision and extended our best wishes for his future successes.

Since Alex communicated his decision to the Diversecities Board of Directors, they have been working together on a transitional leadership plan to ensure the organization continues delivering outstanding services to the community. During this transition period, The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Cindy Au as Interim Chief Executive Officer, effective July 2, 2024.

“Alex has been the driving force behind Diversecities’ growth and impact,” says Norman Poon, Co-Chair of the Board. “His dedication to promoting equity and understanding across diverse communities has been truly inspiring. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

During his tenure as CEO, Alex Montiel achieved remarkable milestones, including being a finalist for the Immigrants of Distinction Award: Achievement Under 35, presented by Immigrant Services Calgary. Under his leadership, Diversecities made significant strides in the modernization of organizational processes and procedures, streamlined programs and services to support the changing needs of our community, and built new partnerships and community collaborations. Alex also served as a major catalyst in the development of Diversecities’ staff and new work culture.

Effective from July 2, 2024, Cindy Au will assume the position of Interim CEO. Cindy brings a passion for community empowerment and a rich history of involvement with Diversecities, from her work as a volunteer to her most recent role as Manager of Operations and Outreach. “I am most grateful for everything that Alex has contributed to our organization, as he has built a new foundation for us. It has been an absolute pleasure to work alongside him over the past two years. I look forward to working with our team to grow what we’ve planted together in the community,” says Cindy.

“As the Interim CEO of Diversecities, I am confident that Cindy will continue to build bridges, celebrate diversity, and create a more inclusive society,” says Alex Montiel.

“Cindy’s journey from volunteer to leader is a testament to her dedication and passion. I believe her leadership will propel Diversecities forward,” said Norman Poon. “We are confident that under her leadership, Diversecities will continue to thrive and positively impact Calgarians. We look forward to working with Cindy.”

“Cindy’s deep understanding of our organization’s values will be instrumental in guiding Diversecities through this new chapter,” commented Lily Ye, Vice Chair of the Board. “The Board fully supports Cindy and believes that her leadership will empower and uplift the services we provide to the community.”

Next week, we will release Cindy’s new vision and future direction for Diversecities as Interim CEO.
